AIDS patient Kelvin Kalasa, 30, is helped into a bath at the Mother of Mercy Hospice in Chilanga, Zambia. The hospice is run by Sister Leonia Komas who founded it eight years ago. The nun and her staff provide care to the poorest AIDS victims in the area.

Olivia Willard gives birth in the village of Simika, southern Malawi. The baby, Mercy, was born in a mud hut and delivered by a traditional birth attendant trained by Doctors Without Borders. In Africa, the joy of childbirth is fraught with uncertainty since 30 percent of babies born to HIV-infected mothers contract the disease.
